Ministry of Planning announced on Friday, a decrease in illiteracy indicators in Iraq, while confirming that the measures taken by the Ministry of Education have contributed to reduce the illiteracy rate.

"The illiteracy rate in Iraq is about 12% among the population aged 15 years and over. This percentage rises among women to about 18% compared to 9% among men. It also rises in the countryside to about 20%, while it decreases in cities to about 11%," The ministry's spokesman, Abdul Zahra Al-Hindawi, told the Iraqi News Agency (INA).

Al-Hindawi explained that "These indicators are low compared to what they were 10 years ago," noting that "the reasons for this decrease in the illiteracy rates are due to two things, the first is the high net enrollment rate in primary school to about 94%, and the second is the policies of the Ministry of Education in opening adult education centers that contributed to reduce the illiteracy rate in Iraq.
