126 destroyed houses rehabilitated in Salah al-Din, ICRC reports

    Iraqi Red Crescent Society confirmed on Saturday, its continued support for families returning to Salah al-Din governorate, while announcing the rehabilitation of 126 destroyed homes in 2022.
     
     "Families returning in Salah al-Din governorate suffer from significant challenges, including damage to areas and villages in the governorate caused by conflicts, damage to infrastructure, water stations and schools, as well as lack of employment opportunities to meet various living needs," The spokeswoman for Iraqi Red Crescent Society, Heba Adnan, stated in an exclusive statement to the Iraqi News Agency (INA).

     "The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) in Iraq continues to support the most vulnerable communities through its Sustainable Return Programme launched in 2019, which includes rehabilitation of homes, provision of cash assistance and other forms of humanitarian support to facilitate an inclusive and sustainable community return", she said. Indicating that "the rehabilitation of 126 destroyed houses in Al-Dujail district of Salah al-Din Governorate was completed in 2022, and ICRC working to assist affected communities in obtaining drinking water."

    She confirmed that "More than 8500 residents of the village of Qargul and the neighboring villages will have access to drinking water after ICRC has worked to rehabilitate water treatment plants in Qargul, south of Salah al-Din governorate, as well as assisting in the delivery of water to more than 14 thousand people after the rehabilitation of al-Farhatia water plant west of Balad province in Salah al-Din governorate" pointing out that "ICRC has also been able to return 360 children to school after the rehabilitation and re-opening of Basma Primary School to receive students within al-Dujail District for 2022-2023."
     
    she continued, "ICRC is working to help the families returning to the affected rural areas and improve their living conditions, as 228 returnee families in al-Shirqat district and Aziz Balad region benefited from the support provided by ICRC in order to enable them to restore their livelihoods again by providing them with agricultural seeds and fertilizers, preparing irrigation canals, and donating livestock to families who depend on agriculture and raising livestock as a primary source of income," noting that "the aid also included providing financial grants to the most vulnerable groups to help them start small businesses."
     
     She pointed out that " ICRC continues to support health institutions in Salah al-Din Governorate continuously by donating medical materials and supplies, which amounted to about 30,000 to support Samarra General Hospitals, Baiji General Hospital, and Balad General Hospital, as the number of medical materials that were provided to each hospital reached about 10,000 medical materials, Pointing out that "the International Committee of the Red Cross provided support to the Iraqi Red Crescent Society through providing health awareness sessions for the returnees in the village of Qargol and 4 neighboring villages in Salah al-Din Governorate."
