Moroccan King Mohammed VI called on Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune to visit Morocco for “dialogue”, after this was not possible during the Arab summit held in Algeria, Moroccan Foreign Minister Nasser Bourita told AFP.
This invitation comes after the Moroccan monarch was absent from attending the Arab summit.
“His Majesty the King gave his instructions to send an open invitation to President Tebboune, since it was not possible to conduct this dialogue in Algeria,” Bourita said.
Mohamed VI had previously called on several occasions for the Algerian president to engage in dialogue in order to normalize relations between the two countries.
Relations between the two countries have been tense for decades, and the tension increased when Algeria announced last August to cut diplomatic relations with Rabat.
Morocco expressed its regret over this decision, and rejected its “false justifications”.
