Canada calls for Russia's exclusion from G20

Canada's Deputy Prime Minister Chrystia Freeland has called for Russia to be expelled from the International Monetary Fund and the Group of Twenty, while acknowledging that her country can do nothing to achieve this goal.

“The sessions of the International Monetary Fund and the World Bank are meetings of firefighters, ministers and central bank chiefs whose job is to protect the global economy.

Russia is now a beacon of fire. Russia was not supposed to attend the IMF meetings,” Bloomberg quoted Freeland as saying. There is no place for the igniter in the meetings of the firefighters."

Freeland added at the same time that all Canada could do to expel Russia from the International Monetary Fund and the Group of Twenty is to publicly condemn the Russian government for its own military operation in Ukraine.
