Ayatollah Al-Sistani announced that Sunday is the first day of Muharram

The Office of the Supreme Religious Authority Sayyed Ali Al-Sistani announces that Sunday will be the first day of the month of Muharram.
 
A statement by the office, received by the Iraqi News Agency (INA) on Saturday, stated that "The sighting of the crescent was not seen by the naked eye last night in our region despite the extensive examination and investigation, therefore tomorrow, Sunday, is the first day of the sacred month of Muharram of 1444 AH."
