UNESCO: A plan to secure journalists in Mosul

    The UNESCO discussed with the security forces a plan for the safety of Mosul journalists.

    A UNESCO statement, received by the Iraqi News Agency (INA), stated that "within the framework of the IPDC project , UNESCO held a meeting of high-ranking officers from the Ministry of Interior in Baghdad in person, and via the Internet, for officers from the Mosul Police Command and the Community Police."

    He explained, "The meeting discussed the plan to link Nineveh Governorate with the Iraqi national mechanism to protect journalists and combat impunity, and to achieve the best possible response to the requirements of the Mosul journalistic community, especially that Nineveh is the first among the governorates of Iraq in terms of the number of journalists killed, numbering 64, for ten years, in addition to The disappearance of 40 journalists, their fate is not yet known.

    He added, "UNESCO discussed with the officers of the Ministry of Interior a number of basic and necessary points indicated by nearly 190 Mosul journalists in an opinion questionnaire carried out by the organization, which focused on safety, security, ending impunity, facilitating the work of journalists in the province and the rights of female journalists."

    For their part, the security leaders expressed their "willingness to cooperate to implement the approved plan and provide all possible facilities to the press community in the province, while submitting periodic reports regarding journalists' cases, and cooperating with the judiciary to reopen the files of missing and murdered journalists in previous years."

    It is noteworthy that this meeting is the third of its kind in the course of implementing the grant of the International Program for the Development of Communications to UNESCO, which is directed within the UNESCO initiative to revive the spirit of Mosul.
