Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison declared a state of emergency Wednesday to allow the government to respond more effectively to the damaging floods, ABC News has reported.
The declaration will give the federal government greater power to deploy the Australian Defence Force (ADF) and financial support to affected areas.
At least 20 people have died and thousands of buildings have been destroyed or damaged in flooding that began in late February as floods caused by heavy rains ravage eastern Australia.
