The Australian authorities in the state of New South Wales evacuated more than 40,000 people due to the floods that swept the region, the worst in decades.
The Associated Press reported that dams in the town of Lismore have collapsed and evacuation orders have been issued and residents have been warned to flee to rooftops, fearing they will be trapped by high water levels.
Floods moving south from Queensland to New South Wales have killed nine people so far, in what is considered one of the worst environmental disasters to hit the region.
