The Omicron strain rarely causes some of the symptoms previously thought to be characteristic of COVID-19. On Friday, January 28, reports the radio Sputnik with reference to the Russian doctor-therapist of the highest category Alexei Vodovozov.

According to him, there was still little time to observe the features of the course of coronavirus infection when infected with the omicron strain, but certain conclusions can already be drawn. Every system in the body is affected by COVID-19, but at least two typical symptoms of the disease are rare when it is caused by Omicron, Vodovozov said.

In particular, shortness of breath is not characteristic of patients infected with this strain.

“It practically does not reach the lungs, it stops in the bronchioles, that is, in the bronchial tree. I would not say that bronchiolitis with Omicron is much better than pneumonia with Delta, but this is a milder disease,” the doctor explained.

Loss of smell, which was previously considered almost the main symptom of a coronavirus infection, is also not among the common complaints when infected with Omicron, he continued.

“With him, loss of smell is rare, and for variants before Delta, this was a common occurrence. Often, by loss of smell, people realized that they were sick and went for tests. With Delta, this was already less common, and with Omicron, loss of smell is a rarity,” – said Vodovozov.

He added that whatever the symptoms of infection with one or another variant of the coronavirus, the best protection against the severe course of COVID-19 is vaccination.

Earlier it was reported that British experts have identified a new symptom of the Omicron strain coronavirus associated with ear damage.
