Forming a specialized committees to study the increasing number of suicide cases, MOI says

    The Ministry of Interior (MOI) counted today, Saturday, the number of suicide cases this year, while announcing forming a specialized committees to study this phenomenon.
     
    “ Due to the increasing rates of suicide  cases throughout the country, MOI has taken a number of measures, including forming of specialized committees to study this phenomenon and come up with data showing its causes and percentage compared to neighboring countries," Ministry spokesman Khaled Al-Muhanna told the Iraqi News Agency (INA).
     
    Al-Muhanna explained that "The recorded suicides in 2021 reached 772 cases, which is about 100 cases more than last year, in which the suicide rate reached 663 cases," noting that " Suicide has been on the rise since 2016, with 393 suicides in 2016, 462 suicides in 2017, 530 case in 2018 and 605 suicides in 2019."
     
    Al-Muhanna indicated that "For the registered age groups less than 20 years old, their percentage was 36.6 percent, and from the age of 20 to 30 years old, their percentage was 32.2 percent, the males percent constituted 55.9%, while the rate of females was 44.8 percent," noting that "Suicides among married people constitute 40 percent and among singles 55 percent."
     
    Al-Muhanna added that "The study concluded with number of facts and made several recommendations, some of which are related to supporting psychological departments at the Ministry of Health, and part of the recommendations are related to the Ministry of Youth and Sports, by encouraging the youth  to occupy their time and practicing their hobbies, and part of them related to judicial aspects, police, society, the Ministry of Education and the media," Noting that "there is cooperation with the Ministry of Higher Education in order to prepare scientific research that deals with societal and psychological issues".
