Prime Minister Mustafa al-Kadhimi has set up a committee to develop the city of Ur, the Cabinet Secretariat General announced on Sunday, noting that this projects is huge, vital and strategic.
"The prime minister has directed to form a committee to develop visions and outlines for the development of the archaeological city of Ur due to its historical and archaeological value and the international media spotlight it received after his Holiness the Pope's visit," Secretariat spokesman Haidar Majeed told The Iraqi News Agency (INA).
"The Secretary-General of the CABINET supervised this committee and held many meetings with the relevant authorities and reached recommendations, the most important of which is the allocation of funds to the city for the purpose of establishing infrastructure," he said, referring to "the completion of the first phase of the city's infrastructure as well as the allocation of funds to the Ministry of Culture for the purpose of rehabilitating the cemetery and the house of the Prophet Ibrahim (Peace Be Upon Him) as well as excavations."
"The project is huge, vital and strategic, as it will include the establishment of an integrated city with religious, heritage and archaeological facilities as well as tourist facilities," Majeed said, adding that "the project will serve Dhi Qar province and open the door to international tourism."
On September 21st, Cabinet Secretary-General Hamid Naeem al-Ghizi confirmed that the development project in the archaeological city of Ur would contribute to reviving the economy of Dhi Qar province and creating jobs.
