Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings has introduced another legend into the Marvel Cinematic Universe – by name and by nature.
Marvel's latest superhero epic, starring the likes of Simu Liu, Awkwafina, and Tony Leung Chiu-wai, only arrived in cinemas last week, but the movie looks on course to break an impressive box office record.
According to a report by Comicbook.com, Shang-Chi is set to surpass expectations by celebrating the biggest opening weekend over the US' Labor Day holiday ever.
Expert number crunchers are already predicting that Shang-Chi will have earned $71 million in its first three days in cinemas, and $83.5 million over the full holiday weekend. If that wasn't impressive enough, some analysts are predicting a whopping taking of $90 million.
If the movie does in fact reach that magic $90 million mark – which is a little over £65 million, UK maths fans – Shang-Chi will have tripled (!) the previous Labor Day record set by Rob Zombie's 2007 re-imagining of Halloween.
Shang-Chi's projected success at the box office, and its proven critical success, makes the prospect of a sequel all the more exciting.
Marvel Studios boss Kevin Feige recently revealed that the team already have "many ideas" about where to take the movie's characters.
"We certainly have many ideas of where to take them and where to put them," Feige said to ComicBook.com. "What's so fun, we know the movie's working when it's not just the title character that people ask about, but it is the co-stars or the supporting players that people ask about.
"And in this movie in particular, that's heartening because we think they're spectacular, and we think they have great potential in the future."
