Greece officials announced on today Thursday that heavy rain during the night helped significantly efforts to extinguish forest fires sweeping Greece.
Many fires have been extinguished in Wapi, Greece's second largest island after Crete, and the southern Peloponnese peninsula, according to reporters on the ground, while officials on the peninsula said the situation is much better.
Local media reported that residents received the first drops of rain by sounding car horns.
Drought was the main cause of devastating fires in Greece, which have destroyed more than 90,000 hectares of forests and farmland, and thousands of homes, according to preliminary statistics, and countless animals have died.
However, the fire brigade warned that the danger is not over yet, flames are still burning in the bushes, and new fires are possible. In addition, the country is currently experiencing strong winds.
The change in weather triggered several lightning strikes, causing small fires to erupt in western Athens and the northern Chalkidiki peninsula.
However, it was quickly brought under control and extinguished, and all firefighting units from more than 20 countries are still on high alert today.
