Salih stresses the need to the coordination with the UN to secure the elections monitoring

    The President of the Republic, Barham Salih, stressed the need for effective coordination between the United Nations and the Election Commission to ensure international monitoring in the upcoming elections.
    The media office of the President of the Republic said in a statement received by the Iraqi News Agency (INA), today, Monday, that "the President of the Republic, Barham Salih, made a phone call with the Secretary-General of the United Nations, Antonio Guterres, about the situation in Iraq and the region."
    He added, "The political and security developments in the country were discussed, the need to consolidate stability and strengthen efforts for the rule of law, and to emphasize the importance of easing tensions in the region and overcoming crises through dialogue."
    He continued: "It was also stressed the need to coordinate efforts and work to find joint dialogues to consolidate the foundations of regional stability, as it was pointed out that the stability and sovereignty of Iraq is a foundation and a meeting point for the security of the whole region and the interests of its people."
    The statement indicated that "the parliamentary elections scheduled to take place next October were discussed, as President Barham Salih stressed the need for effective and serious work and coordination between the United Nations and the Electoral Commission to secure international monitoring and ensure the integrity of the electoral process in a way that contributes to its success, and to ensure broad participation in it and the expression of will." Free voters, and in a way that guarantees sovereignty and respect for the independent decision of the Iraqis. "
    For his part, Secretary-General Antonio Guterres welcomed the positive developments in the country, stressing the United Nations' support for the efforts of the Iraqi authorities to enhance security and stability and consolidate its sovereignty, and help Iraq face the challenges that facing the country in combating terrorism, and reducing the effects of the Corona pandemic.
