The Director General of the Mines Affairs Department, Dhafer Mahmoud Khalaf, told the Iraqi News Agency (INA): "The ministry held a closed meeting in the presence of Minister Hassan Al-Tamimi regarding granting a mandate to companies and humanitarian organizations in the field of mine clearance," noting that "the meeting resulted in the granting of a mandate to 32 companies." Khalaf added that "among the procedures and activities followed in removing and dismantling mines is the use of drones and sonar devices," indicating that "due to the Corona pandemic, the work of the Special Committee on mines has been suspended."
He pointed to "new mechanisms that will be implemented that will eliminate the delay," stressing that "pollution due to mines and war remnants is very large and occupies large areas, and that Iraq, within the international agreement on mines, will finish this file by 2028."
Khalaf added that "work continues, and a meeting was held a week ago on this issue in the presence of one of the international centers.
