The BBC revealed that US President Donald Trump's imposition of 54% tariffs on China will harm Chinese companies trying to enter the US market, but it will be a gift to Chinese President Xi Jinping.

"The US announcement will support the Chinese president's attempts to portray his country as a champion of free trade and a supporter of multilateral institutions," added the BBC, noting that "the Chinese government has already mobilized its state-run media sector to attack the Trump administration's recent announcement and support the Chinese president's rhetoric to promote his country's propaganda policies."

The BBC asserted that "Trump's policies may inevitably lead many countries closer to China and further away from the United States."
