The Ministry of Water Resources confirmed on Thursday that 54,000 seedlings have been planted in 102 locations in Baghdad and the governorates, excluding the Kurdistan. It also indicated that planting seedlings has been raised to 500,000 during this year's spring season.
The head of the Afforestation and Nurseries Department at the Ministry of Water Resources, Mohammed Awad Kadhim, told the Iraqi News Agency (INA): "In implementation of the initiative of Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani to plant 5 million trees across all Iraqi governorates, 54,000 seedlings have been planted so far in various Ministry of Water Resources’ locations in 102 locations in Baghdad and the governorates, excluding the Kurdistan."
He explained that "the ministry is working to complete the agricultural plan during the spring and autumn seasons, which began in 2023 and will end in 2025." He noted that "to ensure the success of the initiative, the Ministry of Water Resources has raised planting to 500,000 seedlings, and this will be achieved during this year's spring season." Kadhim added, "We previously received 38,700 seedlings from the Ministry of Agriculture, and this week we received 5,000 seedlings as the first batch for the spring season." He explained that "upon receiving the batch from the Ministry of Agriculture, our priority was to plant all the ministry's sites in the capital, and now we will head to the governorates."
