First Deputy Speaker of Parliament Mohsen Al-Mandalawi affirmed today, Sunday, that March 16 (National Mass Graves Day) bears witness to the bloodiness of the former Saddam regime, calling on relevant authorities and media institutions to document the crimes of that dark era.
In a statement received by the Iraqi News Agency (INA), Al-Mandalawi said, "Today, we recall with deep pain the criminal practices committed by the bloody Ba'ath regime against various components of our people across our country, most notably Halabja and Anfal massacres, the mass graves, Sha'ban uprising, the killing of scholars, religious figures, and others. These practices embodied the brutality and tyranny of the dictator and his terrorist regime over decades, revealing to the world the horror of his violations and the extent of his thirst for bloodshed to consolidate his authority over the skulls and wounds of Iraqis."
He added, "We voted in the House of Representatives to designate March 16 as a national day for mass graves under Official Holidays Law No. 12 of 2024. We were keen to make this date a testament to the brutality of the former Saddam regime."
According to the statement, Al-Mandalawi called on "the relevant authorities and media institutions to document the crimes of that dark era and highlight the extent of the sacrifices made by our people," stressing, "We will, in turn, work to enact laws that promote justice and contribute to redressing the families of martyrs and guaranteeing their rights."
