German voters headed to the polls on Sunday to vote for new members of the Federal Parliament (Bundestag) in a very important election given the exceptional circumstances the country is going through.

In these early parliamentary elections, 4,506 candidates from 29 parties are competing to win 630 seats in parliament, while five party groups are competing for the position of Chancellor: the Christian Alliance with its candidate Friedrich Merz; its traditional rival, the Social Democratic Party, with its candidate, the current Chancellor Olaf Scholz; the Green Party with its candidate, Minister of Economy Robert Habeck; the far-right Alternative Party with its candidate Alice Weidel; and the left-wing Alliance with its candidate Sarah Wagenknecht.

According to the same polls, Chancellor Olaf Scholz's Social Democratic Party came in third place with 14-16 percent, while the Green Party came in fourth with 12-14 percent, followed by the Left Party in fifth place with 7-8 percent. Federal President Frank-Walter Steinmeier called for early elections at the end of last December after Chancellor Olaf Scholz failed to win the confidence of parliament (Bundestag (P)) in early December, following the collapse of his coalition, which consisted of his Social Democratic Party, the Greens and the Liberals, due to a dispute over the budget.
