Special Representative of the Secretary-General for Iraq United Nations Assistance Mission for Iraq (UNAMI), Mohammed Al-Hassan, confirmed today, Tuesday, that Prime Minister Mohammed Shia Al-Sudani has strengthened the energy vision with concrete proposals for cooperation and partnership between the public and private sectors.
Al-Hassan said in a speech during his attendance at the Iraq Energy Conference, which was followed by the Iraqi News Agency (INA): "I am honored to be with you today to discuss the transition to sustainable energy, which is a critical issue facing Iraq and the world."

He pointed out that "Iraq has suffered from major climate challenges, such as drought, floods and high temperatures exceeding 50 degrees Celsius, which affects infrastructure, especially power grids, making it more difficult to meet basic energy needs."

Al-Hassan added that "climate change requires global collective action, but Iraq can address critical energy issues by investing in renewable energy and reducing dependence on fossil fuels," noting that "this transition is not only necessary to achieve environmental sustainability, but is also crucial to enhancing economic resilience and protecting the country from price fluctuations and supply chain disruptions."

He added that "investing in renewable energy and its efficiency achieves a brighter and more sustainable future for Iraq," indicating that "discussions about sustainable energy are not only about transitional energy systems, but also for a more prosperous and resilient future for Iraq."

He added that "through joint work, it is possible to align with the goals of the Paris Agreement and the Sustainable Development Goals to ensure affordable, reliable and sustainable energy," indicating that "Iraq's transition to using clean energy is not only limited to mitigating the effects of climate change, but is a catalyst for innovation, creating new industries, and opening up economic opportunities."

He pointed out that "this transformation will contribute to helping Iraq diversify its economy and energy sources, paving the way for achieving long-term sustainable development," stressing that "Iraq has already taken bold, transformative and global steps."

He noted that "President Abdul Latif Jamal Rashid, during his participation in the Davos Conference, renewed Iraq's commitment to reducing gas flaring by 2028 and improving air quality, which is clear evidence of Iraq's determination to take measures."
Al-Hassan pointed out the importance of key national initiatives such as the National Action Strategy for Climate Change Mitigation, the Green Growth Strategy, and the Energy Transition Policy Framework, which were developed with the support of the United Nations Development Programme and approved by the government.

He stressed that “these initiatives represent pivotal steps towards building a sustainable and resilient future for Iraq,” praising “Prime Minister Mohammed Shia Al-Sudani, who reinforced this vision during his recent visits with concrete proposals for cooperation and partnership between the public and private sectors to achieve common goals in the fields of energy and climate.”

He continued that “international cooperation and private sector participation are vital to achieving this transformative agenda.”
