Foreign Minister invites his Portuguese counterpart to visit Iraq

    Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs, Fuad Hussein, today, Wednesday, invited his Portuguese counterpart, Paulo Rangel, to visit Iraq.

    A statement by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs received by the Iraqi News Agency (INA) stated that "Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs, Fuad Hussein, met with the Portuguese Minister of Foreign Affairs, Paulo Rangel, on the sidelines of the World Economic Forum in Davos, on Wednesday, January 22, 2025."

    The statement added that "the meeting reviewed bilateral relations between Iraq and Portugal and ways to develop them, with a focus on enhancing economic cooperation."

    He continued, "The two sides discussed prospects for cooperation in the fields of energy and investment, as Fuad Hussein stressed the importance of expanding partnerships between the two countries in vital economic sectors. They also discussed ways to enhance cultural and educational cooperation, which would contribute to strengthening ties between the two peoples."

    The statement continued, "The meeting, on the other hand, addressed the developments of the political situation in the Middle East region, where Hussein informed his Portuguese counterpart of the latest developments in the Iraqi and regional arenas."

    The minister stressed - according to the statement - "the need to enhance international dialogue to support peace and stability in the region," calling on Portuguese companies to "contribute to reconstruction projects in Iraq," noting "the availability of an encouraging and promising investment environment."

    The minister extended an official invitation to "his Portuguese counterpart to visit Iraq," stressing "the importance of this visit in strengthening bilateral relations and closely monitoring the positive developments witnessed by Iraq."
    He urged "the reopening of the Portuguese embassy in Baghdad," stressing that "this step will contribute significantly to strengthening cooperation between the two countries in various fields."
