The UN envoy to Syria, Geir Pedersen, confirmed on Tuesday that the Syrians need a political process that includes all segments of the people, indicating that there are strong signs to take steps towards a comprehensive political process in the country.

"Syria is facing a completely new reality today after the fall of the Assad regime, and the challenges facing Syria are enormous. There are organized armed groups in Syria operating outside the command of military operations," said Pedersen in a briefing before the Security Council - followed by the Iraqi News Agency - INA.

He stressed that he is "concerned about the military escalation, as it could be catastrophic," noting that "the Zionist entity has launched more than 350 strikes on military facilities and equipment since the fall of the former regime."

"The Zionist attacks expose civilians to greater risks and undermine the chances of an organized political transition. There is a necessity of stopping the Zionist attacks on Syria," he included.

The UN envoy called for "ensuring that the political process in Syria remains on track," noting that "there are strong signs of taking steps towards a comprehensive political process in the country and that the Syrians need a political process that includes all segments of the people."
