Justice Minister Khaled Shwani stressed on Tuesday the need to develop the infrastructure of prisons for women.
According to a statement of the Ministry of Justice obtained by the Iraqi News Agency (INA), "Minister of Justice Khaled Shwani chaired a meeting that included the Senior Undersecretary of the Ministry of Justice, Ziad Al-Tamimi, in his capacity as Director General of the Iraqi Reform Department from a lower position, as well as the administrative and correctional cadres of women in the women's cutters in the Iraqi Correctional and Juvenile Reform departments, and during the meeting they discussed the most prominent challenges facing the work of correctional departments, and ways to improve humanitarian conditions in them."
He explained that "during the meeting, the issue of children accompanying their mothers in prisons was discussed and appropriate solutions were found, in addition to accelerating measures to reduce overcrowding."
The minister stressed "the need to develop the infrastructure of prisons for women in particular, and the rest of the prisons in general," stressing "the importance of providing basic necessities for female inmates, in addition to all equipment for correctional sections."
"In coordination with the Ministry of Interior, to provide personal documents for the aforementioned inmates, in a way that contributes to promoting their rights in accordance with human rights standards, these efforts come based on the follow-up of the Prime Minister and his interest in improving the conditions of prison sections in accordance with these standards, and the keenness of the Ministry of Justice to improve the work of correctional institutions," Shawani said.
