President of the Republic, Abdul Latif Jamal Rashid, stressed today, Wednesday, the necessity of implementing the recommendations of the Climate Summit and the Paris Conference, while pointing to the importance of unifying international efforts and working to achieve a ceasefire to preserve the security of the region.
The Presidency of the Republic said in a statement received by the Iraqi News Agency (INA): "President of the Republic Abdul Latif Jamal Rashid met with the Secretary-General of the United Nations, Antonio Guterres, as part of his participation in the United Nations Climate Summit (COP29) held in the Azerbaijani capital, Baku."
He added that "the meeting discussed developments in the international situation, especially the attacks on the Palestinian and Lebanese peoples that have claimed the lives of thousands of civilians."
He stressed "the need to unify international efforts and work to cease fire and maintain the security and stability of the region," praising "the role of the United Nations in this regard and its provision of victims from its cadres during relief operations for innocent civilians and providing them with assistance.
" The President praised "the performance of the new UN envoy to Iraq, Mohammed Al-Hassan," considering "his selection for this mission a distinguished decision by the United Nations."
The meeting discussed the success of the parliamentary elections in the Kurdistan Region and their positive repercussions on the situation in the region and Iraq as a whole, in addition to praising the efforts that helped overcome the crisis of electing a new Speaker of the Council of Representatives.
The two sides discussed the work of the United Nations Climate Summit (COP29), where the President of the Republic stressed "the importance of activating international cooperation mechanisms and working to implement the recommendations of the summit and the Paris Conference in a way that preserves the environment, enhances water and food security, and reduces the negative effects of climate change."
For his part, Guterres thanked the President for his participation in the conference, stressing "the United Nations' determination to expand the horizons of constructive cooperation with Iraq to achieve its development goals in various fields."
