Plasschaert asserts UNAMI support to IHEC

    INA - BAGHDAD

    The Special Representative for the United Nations Assistance Mission for Iraq - UNAMI, Jeanine Hennis-Plasschaert visited the office of the Independent High Electoral Commission – IHEC on Saturday.

    Plasschaert asserted UNAMI’s full support to IHEC to help in finishing the procedures of the upcoming provincial councils’ elections.

    The head of the IHEC council and the electoral administrative manager welcomed this visit that is considered as the first one for Plasschaert after she has been chosen to succeed the former UNAMI representative, Jan Kubis.

    During the meeting, the head and other members of the council presented the missions of the commission and that is considered a constitutional association that manage and organize the electoral operations in Iraq, and that it is the main core of democracy in the country.

    Among the presented missions, they presented the preparations for the upcoming elections to vote for the provincial councils and to provide the needed financial budget for at as well as deciding the final amendments to the law of the provincial councils.

    At the same time, Plasschaert called for increasing the communication means with the citizens to urge them to vote and participate in the elections and show support to the IHEC.

    She also explained that UNAMI is keen to provide the required expertise and investing the capabilities as well as making workshops to improve the performance of the employees of the commission.
