The National Security Advisor confirmed on Saturday that the government continues to repatriate Iraqi displaced persons from Turkey and northern Syria, highlighting the return of over 2,448 Iraqi families from al-Hol camp and revealing the rehabilitation and integration of 1,940 families returning from the camp across seven provinces.
Saeed al-Jiyashi, Strategic Affairs Advisor at the National Security Advisory, stated in a release to the Iraqi News Agency (INA) that "al-Hol camp is situated within northeastern Syria, approximately 13 kilometers from the Iraqi border. The Iraqi families residing in the camp are a consequence of previous events, and we are now endeavoring to responsibly repatriate them with security, intelligence, legal checks, and proper documentation. The Iraqi government's decision is to repatriate only Iraqi nationals until they reach the rehabilitation center in al-Jad'ah, where they will participate in programs and procedures lasting 90 days before being returned to their respective areas."
He emphasized that "the government remains committed to its decision to repatriate all displaced Iraqi families, regardless of whether they are in Turkey or northern Syria, who have been affected by events outside Iraqi territory. This initiative is part of resolving the displaced persons issue and restoring normalcy while advancing to subsequent phases."
Al-Jiyashi noted that "the government has thus far repatriated 16 batches totaling more than 2,448 families, amounting to nearly 9,000 individuals. Among these, 1,940 families have been successfully integrated into their communities, rehabilitated, and peacefully reintegrated across seven Iraqi provinces." He further explained that "the conference organized by the UNDP aimed to support both returning and non-returning families in need of assistance, particularly those who did not leave their areas. The UN has international donors, and in response to the directives of the Iraqi government, the conference was convened to empower local governments to address many challenges they face, ensuring equitable support for returning families and those deserving assistance."
Al-Jiyashi highlighted that "the challenges facing the return of displaced persons from al-Hol include the lack of documentation for some families. The Ministry of Interior is taking necessary measures to identify these individuals, and names are currently being verified." He clarified that "the National Security Agency is making significant efforts through specialized teams, in collaboration with other institutions, including the Intelligence Agency, Joint Operations Command, and various Iraqi agencies working together to facilitate the return of Iraqi families. Individuals required by the judiciary will be referred to the courts, while those without legal issues will receive rehabilitation and be returned to their communities."
