Saudi Arabia hosts International Conference on Women in Islam

Saudi Arabia is hosting the "International Conference on Women in Islam" in Jeddah today (November 6) to highlight the successes, role and contributions of Muslim women from the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) member countries to development.
 
The three-day conference, organised by the OIC, is also aimed at countering the negative propaganda that portrays the Islamic religion as an obstacle to women's rights, according to a statement from Union of OIC News Agencies (UNA).
 
The Conference comprises five working sessions, where ministers, officials, scholars, and thinkers of both genders will delve into the status of women and their rights in Islam in addition to various issues related to women in contemporary societies.
 
It aims to create a detailed plan for legal reforms and political initiatives to foster justice and empower women in Islamic societies.
 
A comprehensive document titled "The Jeddah Document for Women in Islam", is expected to be adopted at the end of the conference.
 
Saudi Foreign Minister Prince Faisal bin Farhan Al Saud in his speech at the 49th Session of the OIC Council of Foreign Ministers held in Mauritania last March expressed Saudi Arabia's initiative to host the conference, underscoring the Kingdom's commitment and active role in promoting the status and empowerment of women across all development sectors.
