Environment determines the area of ​​land contaminated by mines

    The Ministry of Environment announced that 4,600 km of mines have been cleared, while it indicated that the sweeping torrents of mines do not represent a major threat.

    The Director General of the Department of Mine Affairs at the Ministry, Sabah Al-Husseini, told the Iraqi News Agency (INA): "The amount of pollution in Iraq is large, because many wars have passed since the sixties, leading to ISIS," noting that "the size and diversity of pollution is not comparable to anything."

    He added that "the mines that were removed from the lands amounted to more than 59 percent , with tremendous efforts and great determination," noting that "the ministry is working with its partners in the national effort, the Ministries of Defense and Interior, the Border Forces and the Popular Mobilization Forces, since all Iraqis agree on the seriousness of this file and the need to address it." ".

    He stated, "We want the villages of Iraq to be cultivated safely, and for our investment projects to find a land free of threats," explaining that "the land that is still contaminated with mines is 2,100 kilometers, which is the remaining area out of an area of ​​6,700."

    He emphasized that "the torrential sweeping of mines does not represent a great threat, because they can be identified within our new maps in limited areas of slopes that have large water," pointing out that "the change of mine locations is not for large areas."
