Australia thanks Iraq for protecting the diplomatic missions in Baghdad

    Australia thanked the Iraqi government for protecting the diplomatic missions residing in Baghdad, expressing its rejection of the abuse that the Holy Quran was subjected to in Sweden.

    The spokesman for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ahmed Al-Sahaf, stated in a statement received by the Iraqi News Agency (INA), that "the Ambassador of the Republic of Iraq, Basem Hattab Al-Tuma, received a phone call from the Australian Undersecretary of Foreign Affairs for Middle East and North African Affairs, Michelle Chan, in which she expressed her country's government's thanks for the security measures  taken by the Iraqi authorities to protect diplomatic missions operating in Baghdad, including the Australian embassy, and to prevent protesters from reaching it."

    She added, "I also expressed the government's rejection of the Albanian Prime Minister and Minister Benny Wong's infringement of the Holy Qur'an and all hate speech and rejection of the other, stressing that Australia is proud of its ethnic and religious diversity and that everyone is equal before the law, and they practice their rituals and religious rituals completely freely."

    In turn, the ambassador thanked the Undersecretary of Foreign Affairs for her contact and her keenness to communicate thanks of the Australian authorities to the Iraqi government."

    Al-Tuma stated that "the Iraqi government is committed to the provisions of the Vienna Convention to provide full protection for all diplomatic missions operating in Iraq, in addition to the keenness of the Iraqi people in general to respect and appreciate their guests, and that the angry demonstrations took place because of the repeated transgression of the Noble Qur’an in Sweden, and the Swedish authorities allowing an extremist to insult the Holy Qur’an is the holy book of two billion Muslims in the world."
