MOWR to acheive a major water project in Basra

Ministry of Water Resources MOWR revealed Friday a large water project in Basra, while confirming that the project will contribute to dissolving part of the salt tongue in the Shatt al-Arab.

The assistant director of the General Authority for the Maintenance and Operation of the Euphrates Basin at the Ministry of Water Resources, Muhannad Abdel-Hadi, told the Iraqi News Agency, (INA), that "the ministry is in the process of preparing a (water reservoir ) project that will mainly serve the governorate," noting that "this project is part of the government program for this year, and the ministry is in the process of preparing designs for it.

He added, "If the project is implemented and initiated, it will solve a large part of the salt tongue that the Shatt al-Arab suffers from, in addition to the quantities of drinking water that the Basra governorate suffers from," noting that "this water reservoir is trying to exploit the incoming water in the winter for the summer season, it will secure the largest amount of drinking water to the governorate.

With regard to the unified canal project, Abdul Hadi explained, "This project is one of the irrigation projects for drinking water, and it extends from the Ramadi governorate, passing through the division system, towards Baghdad and down to the Wasit governorate," stressing that "this project will provide drinking and irrigation water, and will serve the lands  through the irrigation process, and reduces waste, in addition to reducing excesses.

 He continued, "This channel is lined with a distance of 8 kilometers out of 63 kilometers, and the channel project has been included within the concrete quilt plan, and the designs are under completion during this period, to take into account the difference in the lining mechanism from manual lining to concrete quilting," noting that "after the completion of the designs for this project will be started during this year, by lining a kilometer and a half during this year, and continuing with it within the program if financial allocations are available.
