First Deputy Speaker of parliament Mohsen Al-Mandalawi chaired on Sunday a meeting of the Standing Committee for Political Affairs to discuss a number of draft resolutions.

The media office of the First Deputy Speaker of the parliament said in a statement received by the Iraqi News Agency (INA), that "the First Deputy Speaker of the Parliament, Mohsen Al-Mandalawi, chaired at the opening of the thirteenth session of the Asian Parliamentary Assembly APA, which was launched in the Turkish state of Antalya, a meeting of the Standing Committee for Political Affairs to discuss a set of important decisions."

Al-Mandalawi stressed during his chairmanship and management of the session that "Iraq was elected vice president of the Assembly, and chairman of the Standing Committee for Political Affairs in the twelfth plenary session in 2019, and because of the coinciding holding of parliamentary elections in Iraq in 2021, with the date of the meeting of the Committee, Baghdad was unable to host it at the time," noting that "international political developments require more discussion to reach understandings on them."

He added that "there are 9 draft resolutions under discussion since the last meeting of the Committee in 2019," calling on "participating delegations to express their comments on them to make detailed amendments to the draft resolutions during the next meeting of the Standing Committee."

The Iraqi parliamentary delegation expressed its support for the decisions taken by the Asian Parliamentary Assembly, reiterating "the firm position of the Parliament on the Palestinian issue, and the right of the Palestinian people to establish their independent state with Al-Quds Al-Sharif as its capital, and support for the resolutions related to this regard."

The meeting discussed the following draft resolutions towards an Asian parliament, good governance, rule of law and judicial empowerment, good parliamentary practices, building prosperity in Asia through friendship and cooperation, Asian governments and parliaments for prosperity in Asia, Asian parliaments' unwavering support for the Palestinian people, harmonious development through democracy, and cooperation among APA members to protect and promote multilateralism.
