The Members of the House of Representatives in the US Congress failed to choose a new speaker for the House in Friday's session, during the twelfth round of voting.

In a surprising twist to the vote, House Republican Leader Kevin McCarthy emerged from the 12th vote for Speaker of the House with 213 votes, 14 of which were voted by GOP ex-rejections who had refused to support him just a day earlier.

According to the House clerk, Democratic Minority Leader Rep. Hakeem Jeffries got 211 votes, one less in each of the voting times so far.

The drop in Jefferies' vote tally was attributed to the unexpected absence of Maryland Democratic Rep. David Troon, whose spokesperson said the representative was unable to attend the vote due to previously scheduled surgery.

The seven remaining Republicans split their votes between two alternate candidates, Rep. Jim Jordan of Ohio and Rep. Kevin Hearn of Oklahoma.

The next challenge for McCarthy and his aides is to remove three of the seven remaining retirees, all longtime opponents of the Republican leader.
Despite McCarthy's lead, he failed to get more than half of the available votes, and with 431 members voting, he would need at least 216 votes to win.

According to the press gallery in the House of Representatives, the members were advised to prepare for the 13th vote for the Speaker of the House of Representatives soon.
