Jenin Plasschaert, representative of the Secretary-General of the United Nations announced on Wednesday that the supreme religious authority, Sayyed Ali Al-Sistani, emphasizes the peaceful coexistence of all components in Iraq.
Plasschaert said after meeting Sayyed Al- Sistani in a press conference attended by the reporter of the Iraqi News Agency (INA): "We are today in Najaf on a special day, where we discussed with the supreme religious authority Sayyed Ali Al-Sistani the importance of his wisdom and support for the peaceful coexistence of all components in Iraq and abroad," expressing her gratitude "for meeting His Eminence Sayyed Al-Sistani."
"After four years, I feel that I am Iraqi and my presence here is because of the importance of the Shiite pillar in Iraq and the world," she said, noting that "there is great value in our meeting with Sayyed Al-Sistani."
For his part, UNAOC High Representative, Miguel Angel Moratinos, said during the conference, "For me, it is a great and important day, and my presence in a large city such as Najaf to meet with His Eminence Sayyed Al-Sistani, and I was honored to meet a global religious leader with his wisdom and leadership, one of the leaders who was praised by the Security Council," noting that "Sayyed Al-Sistani calls for moderation."
"During my career, I met many figures and was very impressed by the wisdom of Sayyed Al-Sistani," he said, noting that "I am here not to convey the greetings of UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres and Pope Francis to Sayyed Al-Sistani."
He added that “UNAOC in Iraq supports national reconciliation," pointing out that "I will leave Najaf with a big task ahead of me."
