EU stresses the need to expedite the formation of the government in Iraq

    The European Union stressed, today, Friday, the need to expedite the formation of the government in Iraq with full powers. 

    A statement by the Union, which was followed by the Iraqi News Agency (INA), stated that "the European Union congratulates Abdul Latif Rashid on his election as President of the Republic of Iraq and Muhammad Al-Sudani for his nomination as prime minister-designate.".

    The statement added, "These are positive steps towards the formation of the long-awaited government, a year after the October 2021 elections, for which the European Union sent an electoral monitoring mission.".

    He pointed out that "the European Union condemns the missile attacks that took place near the Iraqi parliament shortly before the vote for the President of the Republic on Thursday," noting that "violence has no place in the democratic process, and differences must be resolved peacefully through constructive dialogue within the constitutional framework.".

    The statement continued, "It is now necessary for Iraq to quickly form a government with a constitutional mandate and full powers that can implement the badly needed reforms and respond to the needs and aspirations of its people." 
    He continued that "the European Union remains committed to strengthening its partnership with Iraq in supporting economic growth, providing job opportunities and achieving stability in society." 
     He stressed that "the existence of Iraq enjoying peace, prosperity and democracy is a necessity for its people, the region and Europe."
