The UN Security Council will vote today, Friday, on a draft resolution condemning the “referendums” to annex several Ukrainian regions to Russia, according to what the French presidency of the council announced Thursday evening, a text that it has no chance of adopting due to the Russian veto.
The French presidency of the Council said that the meeting will be held today, Friday, at 15.00 (1900 GMT), before another discussion is planned regarding the leaks discovered on the Nord Stream gas pipelines in the Baltic Sea.
The draft resolution, drawn up by the United States and Albania, the exact details of which have not yet been published, has no chance of passing due to Russia’s veto, but can then be submitted to the UN General Assembly.
And Tuesday, during the first meeting of the Council on these “referendums” condemned by the West, the United States announced that it would put on the table such a draft resolution with Albania.
US Ambassador Linda Thomas-Greenfield said the goal was to “condemn the sham referendums, call on member states not to recognize any adjustment to Ukraine’s status and force Russia to withdraw its forces from Ukraine.”
She added that if Russia used its veto to “protect itself”, then “we will go to the General Assembly to send an unequivocal message to Moscow.”
