The International Committee of the Red Cross announced today, Thursday, that Iraq and Iran exchanged the remains of 45 soldiers who were victims of the 1980s war.
The committee said in a statement received by the Iraqi News Agency (INA), that "the process of exchanging remains took place today between Iraq and Iran in the presence of representatives of the two countries, as the Iraqi side received the remains of nine Iraqi soldiers that were found in Iranian territory, while the remains of 36 Iranian soldiers that were found were returned."
In the Iraqi territories to their country,” noting that “these remains belong to soldiers who went missing during the battles between 1980-1988, and the exchange process took place at the Shalamcheh border crossing between the two countries.”
The committee affirmed, "It continues to work to provide answers to the families of the missing, provides support to the relevant authorities in their efforts to search for the missing, and supervises the process of exchanging human remains," noting that it "contributes to facilitating dialogue and exchange of information between Iraq and Iran by chairing the tripartite mechanism between Iraq and Iran." To clarify the fate of the soldiers who went missing as a result of the war.
In addition tothat, "The search is still going on for thousands of missing persons under this mechanism," stressing that "the need to know the fate and whereabouts of one of the missing is a fundamental matter for their families."
