The White House reported that US President Joe Biden told his Chinese counterpart, Xi Jinping, during a phone call, that there are "consequences and repercussions" for China in the event that it provides material support to Russia.
"President Joe Biden spoke today with President Xi Jinping, President of the People's Republic of China, and the conversation focused on Russia's unprovoked invasion of Ukraine," the White House statement said.
"President Biden highlighted the views of the United States, our allies, and our partners on this crisis, and explained our efforts to prevent and then respond to the invasion, including by imposing costs on Russia," the statement added.
The US president also referred to "the repercussions and consequences if China provides material support to Russia... and affirmed his support for finding a diplomatic solution to the crisis.".
The two leaders also agreed, according to the statement, on "the importance of maintaining open lines of communication to manage competition between our two countries."
Biden noted that "the US policy on Taiwan has not changed," stressing that "the United States continues to oppose any unilateral changes to the status quo."
