The Taliban announced control of 10 large provinces in Afghanistan, in a new development as the movement progressed towards controlling Afghan cities.
A spokesman for the Afghan Taliban said that the movement had taken control of Herat, the third city in Afghanistan, in what is considered a major station in its offensive after taking control of the strategic city of Ghazni, which brought its militants closer to Kabul, 150 km away from it.
A high-ranking security official in the city said the Taliban had "taken everything," adding that Afghan forces had begun withdrawing to a military base in the nearby town of Ghazara, with the aim of "avoiding further damage to the city."
These statements come against the backdrop of the "Taliban" control of the centers of ten Afghan provinces during the past week and their continued progress in the country's territory.
