Congolese President Felix Antoine Tshisekedi cut short his trip to Europe and decided to return to his country, Sunday, in order to oversee the crisis related to the Nyiragongo volcano eruption and the displacement of thousands from the areas surrounding the city of Goma.

The president said that he is closely following the development of the security and humanitarian situation in North Kivu in the wake of the volcano eruption that occurred on Saturday, and declared his sympathy and support for the local population and called on them to show wisdom and solidarity in facing this natural disaster.
Congo announced that it had opened the border to the Congolese fleeing the volcano and confirmed that tens of thousands of them were housed in schools and churches.
