The Secretary-General of the United Nations, Antonio Guterres, considered that "countries must act now to protect their populations from the catastrophic effects of climate change."
"Time is running out quickly to achieve the goals of the Paris climate agreement ... We need to do more and quickly," Guterres said during presenting his annual report, accompanied by the Director-General of the World Meteorological Organization, Petteri Taalas.
He pointed out that the report showed that 2020 is the year of extreme weather conditions and climate disruption that is fueled by climate change resulting from human activities, which affects lives, destroys livelihoods, and forces millions to flee their homes.
He pointed out that "the current levels of climate ambitions are much less than what is required."
"This is a year of action, as countries must commit to the goal of zero emissions by 2050," Guterres said.
Governments should "act now to protect their populations from the catastrophic effects of climate change," he added.
