Independent High Electoral Commission - IHEC confirmed that the decision not to hold elections for Iraqis abroad is subject to appeal within 3 days of announcement, while noting that the decision concerns the next elections only.
"IHEC has paid great attention to the participation of foreign voters in the elections through coordination with the Ministries of Foreign Affairs, Interior, Immigration and Displaced Persons, as well as the Supreme Committee for Health and Safety, but there are obstacles that the commission faced along with technical, financial, legal and health issues," said the official media spokeswoman of the Commission, Jumana Al-Ghalai.
She explained that the process of registering voters abroad takes 160 days, while the remaining period for biometric registration is forty days, noting that "the Ministry of Foreign Affairs refused to hold elections in Iraqi embassies and consulates abroad for this session only, due to health conditions and the Corona pandemic as well as the safety of Embassy staff and voters,"
"The decision not to hold elections for Iraqis for this session only, is subject to appeal by the judicial commission for elections within 3 days of the decision announcement," she added.
