Board of Commissioners of the Independent High Electoral Commission Chairman, Judge Jalil Adnan Khalaf, and the Deputy Special Representative of UN in Iraq for Political Affairs and Electoral Assistance, Ingibjörg Sólrún Gísladóttir discussed preparations for the upcoming elections, on Wednesday.
Judge Khalaf congratulated Gísladóttir on the occasion of assuming her duties, expressing “his happiness that her visit to the commission would be her first activity in Baghdad,” according to a statement by the Commission received by the Iraqi News Agency (INA).
The two discussed various procedures that the Commission is undertaking, in the framework of updating voter data and the dates for registering political alliances as well as receiving lists of candidates, in addition to clarifying the nature of the challenges that the Board of Commissioners seeks to overcome with a regard to elections abroad,.
“This comes in order to achieve an anticipated electoral process; and affirming that the date of holding the elections on 10th, October 2021 and binding based on the provisions of Article (8)/1st of the Elections Law No. 9 of 2020," included the statement.
Gísladóttir renewed the support of UN Mission in Iraq to the Commission and provide full assistance to complete the upcoming elections.
The meeting was attended by UNAMI Senior Adviser, Amir Aryan, the commissioners, each of: Judge Fayyad Yassin Hussein, Judge Amer Musa Muhammad, and Judge Ali Rashid Muhammad.
