The representative of the Secretary-General of the United Nations in Iraq, Plasschaert, today called on the Iraqi parliament to complete the election law.
"There is an urgent need to complete matters related to the electoral law in Parliament, especially with regard to electoral districts," Plasschaert said at a session of the UN Security Council to discuss the situation in Iraq.
She added that "a period of 15 days to nominate an alternate prime minister for Muhammad Tawfiq Allawi, who apologized for his appointment, is not sufficient to create a political consensus."
Plasschaert called on the Iraqi state to "protect the demonstrators and prosecute the perpetrators of violations", noting that "Iraq is not a poor country, reform of the system and fighting corruption are the ones who achieve success in it."
