Deputy Speaker of the Council of Representatives Bashir Khalil Al-Haddad said that international treaties have established international rights and obligations that have contributed to the consolidation of humanitarian and legal principles such as treaties and agreements concluded to abolish the slave trade.

According to a statement issued by his media office, Al-Haddad called in a speech at the central ceremony marking the seventieth anniversary of the signing of the Geneva Conventions of 1949, in the presence of the President of the Iraqi Red Crescent Society, Dr. Yassin Al-Maamouri and the head of the ICRC delegation in Iraq, Mrs. Katrina Ritz and representatives of the International Committee of the Red Cross. On behalf of ministries, government institutions, commissions, independent bodies, human rights activists and cultural and social figures, the international community should seek to alleviate the severity of the war and its consequences from tensions in international relations and instability that threaten security and peace.
