The Iraqi Ministry of Electricity announced on Saturday, a strategic plan aimed at boosting electricity generation capacity in preparation for the upcoming summer season, with a focus on enhancing transmission and distribution sectors. The plan includes a series of vital projects, with the development of power connectivity projects being a key component, to ensure sustainable energy supplies.

Ministry spokesperson Ahmed Mousa stated to the Iraqi News Agency (INA) that efforts have been directed toward enhancing cooperation with neighboring countries. These agreements include one with Iran, which currently supplies Iraq with over 1,000 megawatts, as well as electricity connectivity projects with Jordan, Turkey, and Saudi Arabia. The first phase of the connection with Jordan contributes 54 megawatts, expected to rise to 150 megawatts, while the connection with Turkey currently provides 300 megawatts to supply the northern electricity grid, with plans to increase this capacity to 600 megawatts in the next phase. Additionally, significant progress has been made on the Gulf connectivity projects, with the first phase expected to supply 500 megawatts to the Basra governorate.

The Ministry emphasized that these projects are part of a broader effort to strengthen the local electrical grid’s capacity to meet the increasing summer demand, ensuring the sustainability of electricity supplies and stabilizing the national energy system.
