Minister of Communications, Hiyam Al-Yasiri, announced on Friday an agreement to sign an additional annex to the existing Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between Iraq and Egypt concerning postal services and financial transfers.

Al-Yasiri emphasized that safeguarding personal data and addressing cybersecurity threats are critical prerequisites for fostering innovation and leadership in the digital era.

In a statement to the Iraqi News Agency (INA), Al-Yasiri highlighted the importance of Arab collaboration in tackling the significant challenges posed by the digital industrial revolution, including digital transformation, automation, and artificial intelligence.

"During my address at the Arab Ministerial Council for Communications and Information in Egypt, I stressed the necessity of unified Arab cooperation and coordinated positions in international forums to address these challenges," she said.

Al-Yasiri further noted that building a robust digital infrastructure capable of keeping pace with the rapid evolution of global digital operations is essential. She also underscored the need to protect personal data, counter cybersecurity threats, and promote innovation, startup ecosystems, research, expertise development, and training.

"Exchanging expertise among Arab nations and aligning our positions are vital steps forward," she added.

The minister pointed out that the digital economy has become one of the most significant sources of global financing, with digital dominance now surpassing traditional forms of influence.

"We must intensify our efforts and dedicate time to secure a prominent position among the world’s nations in this domain," Al-Yasiri stated.

The agreement was reached during bilateral meetings with Egypt’s Minister of Communications and his senior team, aimed at activating the previously signed MoU between Iraq and Egypt. The additional annex to the MoU will focus on cooperation in postal services, financial transfers through the General Company for Post and Savings, digital transformation, and legal skills development, including training on contracts, litigation, and court proceedings.

Al-Yasiri affirmed that the Ministry of Communications is committed to expanding cooperation and knowledge exchange in these areas to the fullest extent possible.

"We are moving forward to activate other fields of collaboration, leveraging shared expertise to achieve our goals," she concluded.
