France proposes a new version of the Baghdad conference to Iraq

    The French Foreign Ministry proposed, on Monday, to its Iraqi counterpart to hold a new version of the Baghdad Conference.

    A statement by the Iraqi Ministry of Foreign Affairs - received by the Iraqi News Agency (INA) - stated that "Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Fuad Hussein made a phone call with French Foreign Minister Jean-Noel Barrot," where the French minister suggested - during the call - holding a new version of the Baghdad Conference as soon as possible, in line with the latest developments on the international scene."

    The statement added that "the French minister reviewed - during the call - the results of his recent visit to Damascus, and his meetings with the political and security leaders there in turn, "Hussein informed his French counterpart of the content of his call with the Syrian Foreign Minister."

    The statement continued, "The two sides discussed developments in the situation in Syria," and stressed "the importance of agreeing on a common vision to achieve stability in the region," stressing "the need to start a comprehensive peace process that ensures the participation of all components of the Syrian people in the political process."

    The statement revealed that "the call addressed bilateral relations between Iraq and France," where the "need to strengthen it in various fields" was emphasized, while "Hussein invited his French counterpart to visit Baghdad, which was welcomed by the French minister, who promised to accept the invitation in the near future."
