Foreign Minister Fuad Hussein confirmed to his Russian counterpart Sergei Lavrov, today, Saturday, that Iraq seeks to avoid the impact of the Syrian events on its security.
A ministry statement received by the Iraqi News Agency (INA) stated that "Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Fuad Hussein met with his Russian counterpart Sergei Lavrov in the Qatari capital, Doha, and during the meeting, they discussed developments in Syria and the seriousness of their repercussions on the security of the region."
According to the statement, the two sides stressed that "Iraq and Russia are concerned with the Syrian issue and stressed the importance of monitoring developments with great care and attention."
The statement continued that "the discussions addressed the outcomes of the tripartite meeting held in Baghdad, which brought together the foreign ministers of Iraq, Syria and Iran. In this context, the Russian Foreign Minister welcomed this meeting, stressing the need to intensify efforts to spare Syria further tragedies."
Hussein pointed out, according to the statement, "the seriousness of developments in Syria, and the imminent humanitarian crisis that may result from them, whether through internal displacement or the influx of refugees to neighboring countries," explaining that "Iraq is striving to work to avoid the impact of the Syrian events on its security and stability."
He stressed that "Iraq's position is to intensify efforts to confront any breaches or violations on the borders by terrorist groups, and that Iraq is interested in protecting its borders and the integrity of its territories and preventing Iraq from being pushed into being part of this conflict."
