The Federal Intelligence and Investigation Agency announced today, Thursday, the arrest of two defendants in possession of antiquities in the Najaf Governorate.
A statement by the Intelligence Agency, received by the Iraqi News Agency (INA), said, “The intelligence agency’s detachments responsible for combating organized crime/Najaf continue their qualitative operations to preserve the cultural heritage, as they monitored information about the presence of two people in possession of artifacts dating back to ancient Iraqi historical eras.”
The statement added, "Immediately, an intelligence work team was formed, to verify the accuracy of the information, and to arrest the accused, who were in possession of antiquities of various shapes and types, after obtaining the necessary judicial approvals."
The statement continued, "When they were interrogated, they frankly admitted to trading in antiquities, and they were referred to the competent authorities to receive fair punishment."
