Iraqi National Security Service-INSS announced on Saturday, foiling a smuggling attempt, intercepting approximately 40 tons of medications in Diyala province.
INSS released a statement, followed by the Iraqi News Agency (INA), stating that “they received intelligence information confirming the presence of a convoy of cargo vehicles carrying smuggled medications from the Kurdistan Region heading towards the capital, Baghdad.
The statement detailed that, following judicial approvals, a force from INSS in Diyala province set up an ambush at one of the entry checkpoints to the province. This operation resulted in the interception of two trailer trucks carrying unregistered and uninspected medications. Additionally, three suspects involved in the smuggling were apprehended.
The statement revealed that during preliminary interrogations, the suspects confessed to the arrival of other vehicles following the same route. Subsequently, the security force moved to set up another ambush, capturing two more trucks along with their drivers. Approximately 40 tons of the smuggled medications were seized, coordinated with relevant authorities, and all suspects were handed over for further legal proceedings in accordance with the law.
